Omagh and the surrounding areas of County Tyrone are home to talented musicians, photographers, artists, craftspeople and performers. From traditional music and wedding photography to handmade crafts and live entertainment, the creative industries offer opportunities for local people to turn their skills and passions into successful businesses.
Whether you’re considering self-employment, developing a side business or expanding an existing creative enterprise, understanding the practical steps involved is essential.
The Music, Photography, Visual Art and Comedy resource from nibusinessinfo.co.uk provides guidance on establishing, managing and growing a business in the creative sector.
Turning Musical Talent into a Business
County Tyrone has a strong musical heritage, with local musicians, bands and performers contributing to weddings, festivals, community events and entertainment venues.
For those considering a music-related business, opportunities include live performances, music tuition, recording, production and event promotion.
However, running a successful music business also involves understanding copyright, licensing, contracts, insurance and financial responsibilities.
The Turning Your Music Talent into a Business guide provides practical advice, while Finance and Funding for Music Businesses explores potential sources of financial support.
Starting a Photography Business
Photography offers opportunities for entrepreneurs throughout Omagh, Fintona, Dromore, Carrickmore, Gortin and surrounding rural communities.
Wedding photography, family portraits, commercial photography, tourism imagery and social media content are all potential markets.
Local businesses increasingly rely on quality visual content to promote products and services online, creating opportunities for photographers specialising in commercial work.
Before starting, photographers should consider equipment costs, pricing, insurance, copyright and customer contracts.
The Starting a Freelance, Part-time or Full-time Photography Business resource provides guidance on establishing and managing a photography enterprise.
Opportunities in Arts, Crafts and Entertainment
Local artists and craftspeople can develop businesses selling handmade jewellery, artwork, ceramics, textiles and personalised gifts.
Online marketplaces, social media and local craft fairs provide opportunities to reach customers throughout Northern Ireland and beyond.
Similarly, comedians, performers and event organisers can explore opportunities through local entertainment venues, festivals and cultural events.
Useful guidance includes Starting an Arts and Crafts Business and Visual Art, Comedy and Performing Arts.
Anyone organising concerts, performances or entertainment events should also consult Running Venues and Musical Events for information on relevant responsibilities.
