Small businesses across Northern Ireland will soon benefit from stronger protections and clearer information when dealing with electricity and gas suppliers.
The Utility Regulator has introduced new licence measures aimed at improving transparency and ensuring fairer treatment for non-domestic energy customers, including many small and micro-businesses.
The changes focus on making it easier for businesses to understand their options and manage their energy contracts with confidence.
Key measures include:

clearer and more transparent price information for small business customers on supplier websites

details of alternatives to security deposits, along with clear guidance on how and when deposits will be returned

confirmation that a deemed contract cannot require notice before a business switches supplier
These measures are part of the Utility Regulator’s Consumer Protection Programme 2024–2029, which is designed to deliver fair engagement and better outcomes for non-domestic energy customers.
The new protections came into effect on 4 February 2026.
