Nick’s Blog: Derelict Buildings Are Killing Town Centres. In Omagh, One Is Bringing It Back.

When a building stands empty, it suggests decline; when it is brought back into use, it shows that a town still has a future.

Town centres are not failing by accident. They are failing because something important has changed. The jobs that kept young people close to home are harder to find. The small businesses that give a town its character are under pressure. Something is being lost. Digital hubs are changing that. They attract businesses, create jobs and bring town centres back to life. This series shows how and why.

In Omagh, one building is changing that.

The building that stopped, and started again

There was a health centre in the town. For decades it was part of everyday life. People walked through its doors when they needed help. It served the community faithfully, year after year, through good times and difficult ones. Then it closed. The doors were locked. The building stood empty at the heart of the town. Forgotten and unused. A place that had once cared for people, left to serve no one. Over time, it became part of the background. Something people noticed but didn’t expect to change. For years, nothing changed. Now it has.

What changed when someone acted

Omagh Enterprise Company invested £6 million to transform that building into a 30,000 square foot Digital Hub. It will house 50 technology and AI-driven businesses and bring 250 jobs into the town centre. More than that, it will bring people, energy and purpose back to the building. Lights are on again. Doors are open. People are coming and going throughout the day. In a town centre under pressure, that is a significant shift. It would be easy to focus on the numbers. 50 businesses. 250 jobs. £6 million invested. They matter. But the building itself matters just as much.

Why the building matters as much as what is in it

A derelict building is not just empty space. It is a sign. It tells people something has stopped. Every person who walks past it sees that. Every business owner deciding whether to stay or go feels it. They wonder if anything will change, or if the town is slowly drifting in the wrong direction. Transforming the building sends a different message. It says the town centre has a future. It says someone believes in it enough to invest. It creates new energy. It gives people a reason to think differently about what the town can become. A Digital Hub is not just a place where people work. It is visible proof that a town has a future.

What has happened in Omagh is not an accident. It is the result of a decision to act when it would have been easier to wait. Many towns have buildings like this. The difference is not the building. It is whether someone steps forward and changes its direction. That is what changes a place from decline to recovery.

Town centres do not recover on their own. They recover when someone decides they will.
