Businesses in Omagh and the surrounding rural areas are being encouraged to sign up for the 2026 Active Travel Challenge, a free initiative running throughout June that promotes healthier, more sustainable ways to travel.
The month-long challenge invites staff to walk, cycle, run or use public transport for everyday journeys. For local businesses, whether based in Omagh town or in more rural parts of Tyrone, it’s a practical way to support employee wellbeing while cutting travel costs and reducing carbon emissions.
Why local businesses should get involved
Taking part can help your business:
- Boost staff health and wellbeing through increased physical activity
- Reduce carbon emissions and support sustainability goals
- Cut down on travel-related costs
- Build team spirit through friendly competition
- Show your commitment to responsible, forward-thinking business practices
For rural businesses in particular, the challenge encourages small, realistic changes to daily travel habits, helping teams think differently about how they move around their local area.
Strong results across Northern Ireland
The 2025 challenge saw over 1,600 participants log more than 27,000 journeys. Together, they saved over 18,000kg of CO2 and more than £22,000 in travel costs. Organisers are aiming to grow participation even further in 2026, with more businesses from towns like Omagh getting involved.
How it works
Throughout June, participants simply log their journeys made by walking, cycling, public transport or other active travel options. This can include commuting, meetings, school runs, shopping trips or even leisure activities.
The challenge is open to organisations of all sizes, making it an easy win for Omagh businesses looking to support staff wellbeing, reduce costs and play their part in building a more sustainable local economy.
Now is the time for businesses across Omagh and the wider rural area to get involved and make a positive change, one journey at a time.
