Can you describe your business?
I run a small architectural practice, taking on projects that are major events in the clients’ life. Such as designing their dream home, extension or place of work. From initial design on a blank sheet of paper, to overseeing the build on site, and handing over the completed build. Along the way I will seek any required planning permissions, provide design solutions and give the option of on site project management.
Why did you start your own business?
It was probably something I always wanted to do, be my own boss. I love challenges, and being a bit of a workaholic it was probably a natural progression for me. So after years of experience working for various architects the opportunity presented at the right time and with confidence I went for it.
What are the best things about running your own business?
Having the flexibility for family life alongside a hectic work life that a normal nine to five may not allow. But because I do something that I genuinely love to do then you can you can find me in the office at all hours! Also it is rewarding to see a finished project on site knowing I was involved from the very concept of the design.
What are the main challenges facing the business?
The collapse of the housing market was a challenging time but I was committed to it and was able to work through that. Now the main challenging aspects are keeping up with new building technologies, building regulations and planning policies. However, with these challenges come opportunities to develop and expand the business.
What advice would you give to someone starting a business?
It will take massive time and commitment to get the business developed, but if it is something you enjoy doing then the effort will come easy. It is important to do your research, talk to other business owners for advice and seek out help from business mentors and coaches. There are so many great people out there willing to share their knowledge.
