Funding For Plastics Innovation Projects

Apply for a share of up to £4 million to develop new solutions to reduce plastic waste

Innovate UK, as part of UK Research and Innovation, will invest up to £4 million in innovation projects to reduce the harm that plastics do to our environment and increase productivity and growth of the UK economy.

The ‘Plastics innovation: towards zero waste’ competition aims to support innovative activities that result in less persistent plastic waste in our environment. For example, this could include:

  • developing new polymer materials
  • new product designs
  • new recycling processes
  • increasing the value of recycled polymer
  • behaviour focussed innovation to reduce plastic waste

Projects should aim to reduce plastic waste going to landfill or the wider environment.

To be eligible for funding, you must:

  • be UK-based
  • carry out your project work in the UK
  • intend to exploit the results from or in the UK

SMEs can carry out the project on their own or they can collaborate with others. A business or research and technology organisation must lead the project. Projects with costs:

  • under £100,000 can be single or collaborative but must be led by an SME
  • £100,000 or more must be collaborative and involve an SME

Innovate UK are looking to fund a portfolio of projects, across a variety of technologies, markets and technological maturities. These may include feasibility studies, industrial research projects or experimental development projects.

The competition opens on Monday 18 June and closes on Wednesday 8 August 2018.
