Business Profile: Tyrone Physio Clinic

Can you describe your business?

My business is a physiotherapy practice that specialises in the assessment, treatment and rehabilitation of musculoskeletal injury. Patients can present with a wide range of ailments from: Work-related injury, spinal pain, nerve pain, sprains and strains, post-surgical and of course sports specific injury. Forming an accurate diagnosis is the first crucial aspect of injury management. Specific orthopaedic and functional testing is used to identify the structure(s) at fault. Treatment is individually tailored and may include manual therapy, manipulation, acupuncture and biomechanical assessment. At the cornerstone of rehabilitation is a graded exercise plan to outline safe return to activity and empower patients to remain injury free long after treatment has concluded.

Why did you start your own business?

I have been qualified as a physiotherapist for twelve years and I spent the last seven years working in private practice. I felt the time was right to open my own clinic and embrace the challenge of running a business, which is something I’ve always had a desire to do.

What are the best things about running your own business?

One of the key things is being able to use my expertise to make a meaningful difference to the quality of life of my patients. I meet a variety of interesting and motivated people and get great satisfaction in seeing their journey to recovery. Having the flexibility to factor in my work with the Tyrone senior football team and of course family life is also a positive.

What are the main challenges facing the business?

One of the main challenges is organising my time to allow me to focus on business management and growth as opposed to just patient interaction. I find this area interesting but somewhat out of my comfort zone!

What advice would you give to someone starting a business?

Back yourself to achieve your goals. Spend time learning, researching and gaining experience in your field and when the time is right you will know. Be prepared to work hard though!

Can you describe your experience of running a business in three words or less?

Challenging but exciting.
