Business Profile: Green Room Cafe & Dot’s Kart Mobile BBQ

Can you describe your business?

My business is a unique little cafe The Green Room in the village of Greencastle. This business has been established for a number of years and I now am in charge of serving the community and further afield with delicious, freshly made, good wholesome meals and snacks. The business caters for families, individual diners and large or small celebratory parties. Recent customers have expressed their delight in the excellent food, the cosy atmosphere and the friendly company. That probably sums up the Green Room. I also have a seasonal business ‘Dot’s Kart Mobile BBQ’, which I set up two years ago. Dot’s Kart provides catering for events and all special occasions from hens/stags, pre and post wedding and birthday parties, Dot’s Kart has appeared on Irish TV and later this month will appear on UTV Ireland programme ‘Along Home Shores’.

Why did you start your own business?

Being in the food industry in various forms from head chef in a top Grammar school, catering both for indoor and outdoor events, working in many catering establishments, I thought, the time is right for me to set up shop in a more settled environment while still working with my freelance endeavours. Maybe it is an age thing.. I’m mature now!

What are the best things about running your own business?

The best aspects of running my own business is being in control of the working hours and really seeing the rewards of customer satisfaction at the ‘grass roots’ of eating out. I enjoy the buzz of the business world. I am a busy person who takes great pride in seeing a job done from start to finish. I am on the ground floor in my business and alongside loyal, hardworking staff, I am the business. Customers like to see the ‘lady in charge’.

What are the main challenges facing the business?

Every venture in life will present challenges and none any less or any more than my ‘tea room’ and mobile BBQ. Challenges keep me motivated and driven. Some challenges might be – the weather! Working in a rural community where there could be a heavy snow fall or icy roads night prevent customers who have pre-booked arriving for their planned meal/party etc and barbecue season in Ireland can be a big challenge! I don’t see any challenge that will faze me. I am a hard working, committed, capable manager who believes in turning a negative into a positive.

What advice would you give to someone starting a business?

My advice indeed would suit me so individuals who intend to start a business should consider their own strengths and use these to their advantage. Perhaps I might say, ‘

Why didn’t I do this sooner’

Can you describe your experience of running a business in three words or less? I really could use more than three words and they all would be positive, however the three most important words would be: New, exciting and rewarding.
