Can you describe your business?

If Hollywood Fitness were an animal, it would be a unicorn. With wings. And glitter, lots of glitter. In the ‘grown up’ world, Hollywood Fitness is a private Training Facility located in Cookstown, County Tyrone. With three fully equipped, private studios, we offer the beautiful and lovely public 1-1 Personal Training, Group Training and a range of fun and challenging classes.

Why did you start your own business?

I originally wanted to be Batman but that job was taken, so it was onto plan B, personal training. I’ve always had a passion for all things fitness, health and otherwise. I love people and I love helping people be the best version of themselves. The Fitness Industry can be a scary and judgemental place at times and I wanted to offer an alternative approach to this thing we call fitness, free from all the nonsense. I grew up helping people with their training and diet and it seemed a natural progression for me to turn this into a career. I saw everything I liked about the fitness industry and everything I didn’t like and made it my mission to provide something better, something people could enjoy.

What are the best things about running your own business?

This may sound like a cornball line, but it genuinely is seeing the people we help progress from absolute beginner to fully fledged Hollywood Fitness ‘hero’. Running my own business has afforded me the luxury of running things the way I see fit. If my heroes don’t like something or if it isn’t working, we can react instantly and change it up to make the experience better for them. Being the boss also allows me to choose the music in the studio which can be questionable at times but highly enjoyable. You haven’t lived until you’ve pushed a prowler to the melodic tones of Johnny Cash!

What are the main challenges facing the business?

The main challenge we face is the initial fear folks have of contacting a Personal Trainer to begin with. People are naturally scared of embarking on something they fear they may fail at. Our biggest attribute is making them feel welcome and comfortable with us and ensuring that they succeed in achieving their goals. More and more people are joining the ranks of the personal training world and I think it’s great. The more well qualified and knowledgeable trainers out there, the more we can help on the front line educating people on the benefits of a healthier lifestyle. People say that the industry is becoming saturated but in my opinion, there will never be too many professionals when it comes to helping folks with their health and fitness.

What advice would you give to someone starting a business?

Choose something you’re passionate about, 70-80 hour weeks can soon become minus craic if you don’t love what you do. Know your numbers and check them again. And again. Ask for advice from someone who has done what you want to do but don’t get too bogged down with their view either. Listen to what they have to say and make your mind up yourself afterwards. Don’t be afraid of failure. Something very cool and sparkly usually lies on the other side of a risk. Go for it.

Can you describe your experience of running a business in three words or less?

Best. Decision. Ever.
