Can you describe your business?

An independent fashion retailer situated in the heart of Omagh on Market Street. We offer a carefully considered range of ladies wear that will set you apart whether you are looking desirable day/ casual wear or a stunning outfit for any special occasion such as a wedding, confirmation or christening. Our brands are exclusive to the Omagh area and we pride ourselves in offering a unique shopping experience giving our customers individual attention and service.

Why did you start your own business?

I was very fortunate to have had the opportunity in February 2006 to take over ownership of the boutique having worked for the previous owner whilst I was a student. After I graduated from university, I began working in the retail industry for Arcadia Retail Limited and then progressed to manage She Boutique for two years, so I knew the business thoroughly and was keen to develop an already established business, bringing new ideas to move the business along successfully.

What are the best things about running your own business?

There are so many things I love and I have been very lucky that my customers and staff make my job so fulfilling, building relationships and satisfying their needs makes me proud of what we offer. I love the buzz when travelling to source new brands and select clothing for the season ahead and although exciting; can be stressful because I have to pick the correct styles to ensure they sell! Having the flexibility to work around my family commitments is great especially when my young children need me but achieving the perfect work like balance can be difficult juggling everything and when you set yourself high standards the pressure can be immense, but I love the challenge and you get out what you put in.

What are the main challenges facing the business?

Within the retail industry the main challenges a small independent like myself face is the competition from high street stores and online shopping. Shoppers are cautious with their money and spending power has changed over the last 10 years. We no longer buy on impulse so we need good quality clothing and styles to last. Thankfully my brands are high quality and value for money but with the vast choice consumers have it is extremely competitive. Smaller independents are able to offer a unique shopping experience and this is how we differ from the high street.

What advice would you give to someone starting a business?

My advice would be to make certain that you have a solid, realistic business plan and know your target market so you can position your business successfully. Be prepared to work long hours and give it your all as you will need to work hard and have a strong, positive mindset for those challenging days. Finally to enjoy your business as it takes courage to start and take the risk but very rewarding in so many ways.

Can you describe your experience of running a business in three words or less?

Challenging, rewarding, demanding.
