Business Profile: Blackthorn Design

Can you describe your business?

We are a graphic design company with a core specialism in flexible, film packaging design – crisp bags, fresh food, sweet packets etc. Of course as with any design company, we also address branding, identity, graphics, plus all other things expected in a graphic design agency.

Why did you start your own business?

We started our own business after noticing a gap in the market. Many designers did not have a full understanding of the flexographic print process, whereas I had worked in the production side of this business for a few years. After gaining freelance work for a number of years we decided to look at the numbers and then launched Blackthorn Design in 2008.

What are the best things about running your own business?

The independence and flexibility. It’s a very rewarding process, and it has got its perks, being your own boss means that ultimately you decide when you work and how hard you work. I also get a kick out of knowing that every grocery store or multiple in the country has my designs on their shelves.

What are the main challenges facing the business?

The main challenges facing our business is cash flow, keeping on top of the financials is a full time process, you do have to chase some for payment and for a ‘creative’ business, that constant process of keeping on top of this can impact on creativity flow.

What advice would you give to someone starting a business?

I would tell people to do their homework on their idea first, go over the detail as much as possible. However don’t over engineer the process, as some can procrastinate at this stage forever – never getting their idea started. Be persistent and consistent with generating sales and delivering, and also remember the toughest part is making the decision to just do it. Also, don’t forget to enjoy it!

Can you describe your experience of running a business in three words or less?

Rewarding, challenging and exciting.
