Can you describe your business?

I am a freelance designer, creating stylish and modern websites that look great on all modern devices. Combined with strong ideas, I help businesses to develop an online growth strategy through tailored design, search engine optimization and online marketing. I also provide a graphic design service, creating everything from simple flyers and online advertisements to developing strong brands.

Why did you start your own business?

After graduating from Ulster University in the summer I just decided to go for it. I did a lot of research and saw a gap in the market for an effective and modern web design service targeted towards small to medium sized businesses here in the North West.

What are the best things about running your own business?

There is definitely no shortage of perks in being your own boss. In terms of the design aspect, it allows me to have complete control over the work being produced. I am able to set my own aims and targets as to what direction I want the business to go. I also get to mix it up a bit so that I’m not doing the same stuff over and over. As a freelancer, my job is changing constantly so I have to adapt, learn and update my skills. Being able to choose my own hours is another massive benefit as it allows me to be flexible with regards football and training. At the same time it takes a bit of self-discipline to get into a proper working routine.

What are the main challenges facing the business?

When it comes to creating the web, there are many different areas you can specialize in – design, development, SEO and online marketing to name a few. To create an effective online strategy you need to be able to get your head around all these aspects. Keeping on top of all the latest web technologies is definitely a challenge.

What advice would you give to someone starting a business?

Don’t be afraid to ask for help. There is always someone smarter, more educated, more experienced, so it’s OK to ask questions if you’re stuck. Make sure you research your market well and just have confidence in your ability to go for it. Be prepared to work long hours, work late nights and sacrifice a few nights out – easier said than done on the latter.

Can you describe your experience of running a business in three words or less?

Enjoyable, challenging, rewarding.
