DANI (Digital Advertising NI) Career Choice

CAREER PROFILE
Name: Naomh McElhatton
Age: 30
Job: Founder and managing director
of DANI (Digital Advertising NI)

What does your job involve?

My job takes on a number of roles, aside from the day-to-day running of a small business with four employees. At DANI we offer a number of online consultancy services, which include web design and development, SEO, social media management, advertising, PR and devising bespoke online strategies. I like to work closely with all of my clients ensuring delivery, value and a first class service.

How did you get into this line of work?

Having worked in the advertising and marketing world for ten years there was a natural progression from print to radio to online.

Do you have a typical working day?

No two days are the same. Running between the two offices in Belfast and Pomeroy keeps you on your toes. I try to have an office day on Monday to catch up on paperwork and emails. Then I’m usually in client meetings for the remainder of the week.

What skills are essential for your job?

Organisation, leadership, motivation and account management.

What’s the best thing about your job?

Being my own boss!

And the worst?

Being my own boss! As I can never switch off!

Who has inspired you most in your career?

I gain inspiration from any successful business woman. Running a business and raring two young daughters can be tough work! I admire Karen Brady – she was 23 when appointed MD of Birmingham City Football Club, sheer determination and hard work pays off!

Tell us an interesting fact about yourself.

I was voted one of NI’s Top 40 under 40 entrepreneurs in 2011 and am now an associate lecturer at the University of Ulster, which is a great honour.

What is the best piece of advice you have ever been given?

If you are determined to succeed you will . Obstacles don’t have to stop you. If you run into a wall don’t turn around or give up. Figure out how to climb it, go through it, or work around it!

How do you relax in your spare time?

Aside from spending quality time with my hubby Michael and two gorgeous daughters Aoife-Lily and Eilish, I love long distance running! I ran the Dublin Marathon last year and am now addicted; running clears the head and totally destresses me.

If you could swap jobs with someone for the day, who would it be and why?

Natalie Massenet (Founder of Net-A-Porter, one of the most stylish online stores). Aside from her true entrepreneurial spirit, fabulous shoes, clothes and accessories – she sold the business for £50million.

What advice would you offer to someone applying for a similar role?

Be prepared to work longer hours than 9am-5pm!

If you were given the chance to live your life all over again, do you think you would have chosen your current career?

Yes – I love the world of marketing, especially the world of online marketing. The technological opportunities are endless. To work with clients, add value to their business and help them see a clear return is incredibly rewarding.
