Omagh businesses are being invited to comment on proposed EU changes to energy and tyre labelling requirements that may apply in Northern Ireland.

The Department for the Economy (DfE) and Department for Infrastructure (DfI) are seeking views on an EU proposal aimed at simplifying existing labelling rules and making greater use of digital information.

For businesses in Omagh and the surrounding area that sell, supply or distribute energy-related products or tyres, the changes could affect how product information is provided to customers and how compliance requirements are managed.

Subject to the democratic scrutiny arrangements under the Windsor Framework, the proposed regulation would apply in Northern Ireland.

What could change for energy labelling?

The proposal would keep the current range of products covered by energy-labelling rules but would modernise how information is provided.

Changes include:

  • reducing some paper-based requirements
  • making greater use of the EPREL product database and QR codes
  • allowing more product information to be provided digitally
  • clarifying the responsibilities of suppliers, dealers and other businesses
  • simplifying some compliance requirements

The aim is to reduce unnecessary administration while ensuring consumers can continue to access clear information about the energy efficiency of products.

What could change for tyre labelling?

Similar changes are proposed for businesses involved in the sale, supply or fitting of tyres.

The proposals would increase the use of digital information, update how tyre information must be displayed and clarify the responsibilities of businesses throughout the supply chain, including dealers and tyre fitters.

There would also be updated requirements around online sales, compliance and market surveillance.

The existing purpose of tyre labels, helping customers compare tyre efficiency and performance, would remain unchanged.

Why should local businesses respond?

Businesses across Omagh and the wider Fermanagh and Omagh area may have practical experience of how existing labelling requirements operate.

DfE and DfI are therefore inviting businesses and other interested parties to highlight any concerns, practical issues or potential benefits they see within the proposals.

This is an opportunity for local businesses that could be affected to have their views considered before the proposed changes progress further.
