Making Tax Digital Quarterly Update Deadline Approaching

A woman in a white blouse looks down at a professional camera. Behind her are bright studio lights, a yellow swoosh, and Omagh Enterprise and government logos.

Sole traders and landlords across Omagh and the surrounding area may need to submit their first Making Tax Digital for Income Tax quarterly update by Friday 7 August 2026.

The requirement applies to people earning more than £50,000 a year from self-employment and property income.

What is the quarterly update?

The update covers income and expenses from the first three months of the tax year.

It is a short summary submitted directly to HM Revenue & Customs through recognised accounting software and should only take a few minutes to complete.

Some software packages include HMRC Assist, a digital support tool that provides tailored feedback and can help users identify possible errors before submitting their figures. However, individuals remain responsible for ensuring the information provided is accurate.

After submitting each quarterly update, users will also receive an estimate of their tax bill, helping local business owners and landlords plan ahead and manage their finances.

Does this replace the annual tax return?

No. Quarterly updates do not replace the annual Self Assessment tax return.

The deadline for submitting a tax return and paying any tax owed remains 31 January.

Those affected should check that they are using recognised software and submit their first quarterly update before the 7 August deadline.
