Businesses and communities across Omagh and the wider Fermanagh and Omagh District Council area are being encouraged to have their say on a new long-term rural policy that could shape the future of rural life for the next 15 years.

The Department of Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs (DAERA) has launched a public consultation on its draft policy, Rural NI: Our New Approach 2026–2041.

This proposed policy aims to better understand, support and champion rural communities, recognising both the challenges they face and the opportunities they offer. For areas like Omagh, where rural businesses, farming, tourism and local enterprise play a vital role, this consultation is particularly important.

The draft has been developed through a co-design process involving government departments, local councils, community and voluntary organisations, and academic partners. A key focus is ensuring that rural voices and lived experiences are placed at the centre of decision-making.

What the Policy Focuses On

The 15-year strategy is built around five key proposals:

  • Putting rural voices at the heart of government
  • Creating local partnerships to deliver local impact
  • Improving understanding of rural needs and challenges
  • Strengthening communities at both local and regional level
  • Reviewing the Rural Needs Act (Northern Ireland) 2016

Why It Matters for Omagh Businesses

For local businesses, this is an opportunity to influence how support, infrastructure, funding and services are shaped in rural areas over the coming years.

Issues such as connectivity, access to services, workforce challenges and sustainable growth are all likely to feature in this conversation. Ensuring that Omagh and surrounding rural areas are properly represented will be key to securing the right support and investment.

Have Your Say

DAERA is inviting responses from individuals, businesses and organisations across Northern Ireland.

The consultation is open until Monday 1 June 2026.
