In this special episode of the 60 Second Challenge, international speaker and broadcaster David Meade shares the highs and hurdles of running a purpose-driven business. From managed risks to meaningful rewards, David opens up about how he turned his passion for innovation and people into a thriving enterprise.
Filmed at the Strule Arts Centre, this episode of the 60 Second Challenge features David Meade – a television presenter, keynote speaker, and business consultant – as he takes on six questions in 60 seconds with Nick O’Shiel.
David offers a unique perspective on entrepreneurship, describing how he left his job as a university lecturer to pursue a bold idea in business development and corporate training. He speaks about the benefits of flexibility, the challenge of capacity in a solo-led business, and how managed risks helped launch his successful career.
His story is both inspirational and practical – a powerful reminder that entrepreneurship often begins with courage and clear-headed planning.

Nick O’Shiel:
Hello and welcome to the 60 Second Challenge with Omagh Enterprise Company. Today we’re at the Strule Arts Centre, and I’m with David Meade, who’s agreed to take the challenge. You’re very welcome.
David Meade:
Delighted – thank you for asking.
Nick O’Shiel:
I know you’ve had a busy day, so we appreciate it. Let’s jump right in.
First question – can you describe your business?
David Meade:
Yes! There are two sides to my business. One is television – I make programmes for the BBC. But the much bigger part is corporate events and executive development. I work with organisations of all sizes to help them become more efficient and effective.
Nick O’Shiel:
And why did you start the business?
David Meade:
I’m passionate about entrepreneurship. I really believe the way to fix a struggling economy is for individuals to take initiative and work for themselves. It doesn’t always work, but that’s part of the fun.
Nick O’Shiel:
What are the best things about running your own business?
David Meade:
Flexibility. I have two young kids, and although work travel can be intense – I’ve been home one night in the last two weeks – the flip side is I get three months off in the summer. No calls, no work – just quality family time.
Nick O’Shiel:
What are some of the main challenges?
David Meade:
Managing time and capacity. There’s only one of me. Even when I try to recommend others to clients, they just want me – which is great, but also limiting. I need to clone myself!
Nick O’Shiel:
What advice would you give someone starting a business?
David Meade:
Take managed risks. I left a secure job as a lecturer when my wife was two months pregnant. I did the maths: even with no income for a year, we could still survive. So I gave it a year, and if it didn’t work, I’d go back. But it worked.
Nick O’Shiel:
And in three words or less – how would you describe your experience?
David Meade:
Rewarding. Rewarding. Rewarding.
Nick O’Shiel:
We’ll stop the clock there – just over three minutes, but a fantastic challenge. Thank you, David.
