Nick’s Blog: Can AI Make Us More Capable Without Making Us More Dependent?

Two doctors in lab coats look at a laptop displaying a glowing digital AI interface, with the Omagh Enterprise logo and a circular inset photo of Nick in a suit.

Artificial Intelligence can already help us write, research, analyse information, generate ideas and solve problems. AI will continue to become more powerful. The important question is not how capable AI becomes, but whether we become more capable because of it. Used well, AI can help us understand difficult issues and reduce unnecessary work. Used badly, it can make us more dependent and less willing to think for ourselves. The challenge is to gain the benefits without losing our abilities.

Use AI to Think Better, Not to Avoid Thinking

One of the most useful things AI can do is help us see a problem from different angles. We can ask it to challenge an assumption, spot something we have missed, explain an idea more clearly and ask better questions. That can leave us more able to deal with the issue ourselves. But there is an important difference between asking AI to help us think and asking it to do our thinking for us. Instead of asking, “What should I do?” ask “What am I missing?”, “What are the best arguments on each side?” or “What is the clear decision I need to make?” The real test of AI is not whether it can do more for us, but whether it helps us become better at thinking, making decisions and acting for ourselves.

Keep the Human Part Human

Good decision-making is about more than just gathering information. It involves personal values, experience and understanding how people will be affected by a decision. AI may know a lot about a subject without knowing what it feels like to talk to another person, understand the background to a problem or recognise that the technically correct answer may not be the wisest one. Good decisions often depend not only on what we know, but on what matters for the people involved. That is why human values will be more important rather than less important as AI improves. The aim should not be to compete with AI at what it does best, but to use it to become better at what people do best: ask good questions, make good decisions, build good relationships and take responsibility for our actions.

Become More Capable, Not More Dependent

There is a simple test we can apply: after using AI, ask yourself, am I more able to understand the issue, make the decision or do the work myself? If the answer is yes, AI is probably helping you to become more effective. If you find that you are unable or unwilling to act without asking AI what to do next, you may be moving in the other direction. The opportunity is significant. AI can give more people access to knowledge, expertise and tools that were once expensive and difficult to get. It can help people learn, create new things, solve problems and make better use of their time. But greater ability without good human values is not enough.

As technology becomes more powerful, our job is to think better, make better decisions and stay connected to other people. That is the real test of progress with AI.
