Omagh town centre, like many towns across Northern Ireland, continues to experience the challenge of vacant retail units and underused commercial properties. However, support is available for businesses willing to bring empty premises back into use.
The Back in Business rate support scheme has been designed to encourage businesses to occupy long-term vacant retail properties by offering a substantial reduction in business rates costs.
Businesses taking on eligible premises can receive a 50% discount on rates for up to 24 months, helping reduce overheads during the early stages of trading, relocation or expansion.
For entrepreneurs, independent retailers and growing businesses considering a move into Omagh town centre, the scheme could provide valuable financial support while helping increase activity, footfall and confidence across the local high street.
To qualify, businesses must have occupied the premises on or after 1 April 2024, with the property having been vacant for at least 12 months beforehand. The premises must previously have been used for retail purposes, or be considered suitable for retail use.
The initiative also highlights the wider importance of bringing empty buildings back into productive use as part of ongoing town centre regeneration efforts across Omagh and the wider region.
Applications remain open until 31 March 2027.
