Have Your Say on Northern Ireland’s New Circular Economy Strategy

A green recycling symbol is surrounded by cans, batteries, plastic bottles, lids, and forks on a white background. A blue banner reads: Have Your Say on Northern Ireland’s New Circular Economy Strategy - Omagh Enterprise.

Local businesses, social enterprises and community organisations across Omagh are being encouraged to share their views on a new draft waste and resource strategy that could shape how we all reduce costs, reuse materials and cut waste in the years ahead.

The Department of Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs has launched a public consultation on its draft strategy, Rethinking Our Resources: Northern Ireland Resources and Waste Management Strategy, focused on moving the region towards a more sustainable circular economy.

What does this mean for Omagh businesses?

Instead of the traditional take, make, use and dispose model, the strategy promotes a circular approach centred on reduce, reuse, repair and recycle.

For local firms, this could mean:

• Lower waste disposal costs
• More efficient use of materials and stock
• New opportunities in repair, refurbishment and recycling services
• Stronger environmental credentials when bidding for contracts
• Support for innovation and greener supply chains

This is particularly relevant for manufacturers, retailers, hospitality, construction, food producers and social enterprises operating across Omagh and the wider district.

What the draft strategy proposes

The plan combines policy reform, modern technology and partnership working to deliver long term sustainability.

It covers controlled waste from households, commercial and industrial premises, along with category 3 animal by products.

To deliver change, the strategy sets out 10 targets and 63 actions, including:

• More prevention and reuse of materials
• Improved household and business recycling rates
• Extended producer responsibility for packaging
• A deposit return scheme for drinks containers
• Increased capture of food waste and less landfill
• Better waste management practices in commercial and industrial settings
• Real world case studies showing what already works

Why this matters locally

For Omagh based businesses, a shift to circular practices is not just environmental. It is commercial.

Reducing waste can cut costs, open new revenue streams and strengthen your brand with customers and public sector buyers who increasingly expect sustainable operations.

Taking part in the consultation is also a chance to ensure rural and regional business voices are heard, not just larger urban centres.
