There’s a quiet change taking place in Omagh. Not political, not noisy, but something that could reshape how we think about work, opportunity and where the next generation builds their lives.
For many years, success meant leaving. People travelled far and wide: some came back, many didn’t. But that story is changing. With digital technology, fast connectivity and the rise of AI, the next wave of opportunity isn’t somewhere else. It’s here, at home.
A story of coming home: Meet Caoileann.
“Moving into the Digi-Hub gave me a focused space to boost creativity as well as productivity. It’s elevated the work I do and I wouldn’t look back now.”
Her story captures what’s happening across the town. More people are choosing to work, create and grow their businesses here. They’re building new careers close to family and community: something that wasn’t always possible before.
A town at a turning point
In 2027, five of Omagh’s largest schools will move to the new Strule Shared Education Campus. That will leave big, well-built town-centre spaces ready for a new purpose.
We can let them sit empty or we can turn them into something better, spaces filled again with activity and ideas. Designers, entrepreneurs and remote workers creating jobs, new services and growth for the town.
The buildings are the same but this time, the builders are different.
From empty buildings to new opportunity
That’s the goal of the Omagh Enterprise Digi-Hub Network: to transform underused buildings into connected, creative workspaces that drive new business and jobs.
Here’s how it’s developing:
| Phase | Years | Focus | Businesses | Jobs |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 1990–2015 | Omagh Enterprise growth | 80 | 400 |
| 2 | 2015–2025 | £6m Digital Hub launch | 50 | 250 |
| 3 | 2025–2030 | AI-driven start-ups and scale-ups | 170 | 850 |
| 4 | 2030–2035 | Town-centre enterprise campus | 300 | 1,500 |
| Total: 600 businesses and 3,000 jobs by 2035. | ||||
And that’s only part of the story. Every new business supports others: from cafés and shops to childcare and design services. The impact spreads, creating even more jobs across the town.
Why it works
Because the base is already here.
Omagh Enterprise has Project Kelvin’s superfast broadband, over 100,000 square feet of workspace, and a strong track record of helping people start and grow businesses. With training, mentoring and new investment, we can take the next step and grow faster.
If other towns can do it, like Enniskillen with its £74 million investment from Fermanagh Omagh Council, there’s no reason Omagh shouldn’t do the same. We have the people, the energy and the experience.
So, what is a Digi-Hub?
It’s more than a shared space or a coffee area. It’s a community.
A Digi-Hub brings together:
- Entrepreneurs creating local jobs.
- Remote workers connecting to global markets.
- Mentors and investors helping ideas grow.
- Access to AI tools and digital training.
Think of it as the new workspace for the AI economy, where laptops and ideas replace machinery, but the spirit of enterprise is exactly the same.
Why Omagh? Why now?
The next industrial revolution is technology-driven AI. Towns that connect and adapt will thrive. Those that don’t, won’t.
Omagh already has what it needs: people with skills, a strong story, and the infrastructure to match. What’s needed now is more support and investment to build on what’s working.
If the region can capture even a small share of the AI economy, it means thousands of new jobs and millions in new income. Omagh is well placed to lead that change.
