Farm Safety Reminder for Omagh and Surrounding Areas: Slurry Mixing Risks

A yellow "Safety First" road sign against a partly cloudy sky with a banner stating "Farm Safety Reminder for Omagh and Surrounding Areas: Slurry Mixing Risks.

As the closed spreading period approaches, farmers across Omagh and the wider district are being reminded to put safety first when mixing slurry. The Farm Safety Partnership and the Health and Safety Executive for Northern Ireland (HSENI) are stressing the importance of following the slurry mixing code—because just one breath of poisonous slurry gas can be fatal.

Slurry gas, released quickly and in large amounts when mixing begins, contains hydrogen sulphide—an extremely dangerous gas. Even at low levels, it can remove your sense of smell, meaning you won’t know it’s there. At higher concentrations, it can cause disorientation, difficulty breathing, and in the worst cases, death after a single breath.

Slurry Mixing Code – Stay Safe:

  • Open all doors and windows.

  • If possible, mix on a windy day.

  • Keep children away from the area at all times.

  • Remove all animals from buildings before starting.

  • Use outside mixing points first.

  • If slats are removed, cover exposed tank areas beside the pump/mixer.

  • Start the pump/mixer and leave the building immediately—stay out for at least 30 minutes.

  • If you must go back in, ensure another adult is outside and aware of your actions.

  • When adjusting or moving equipment, exit quickly and avoid re-entering for another 30 minutes.

Never:

  • Rely on filter facemasks.

  • Treat gas monitors as a replacement for safe working.

  • Light naked flames near slurry (some gases are flammable).

  • Stand near the pump or exhaust of a vacuum tanker while it’s filling.

With many local farms preparing for the busy winter season, a few simple precautions could save lives. Businesses in Omagh’s farming community are encouraged to share these reminders widely—safety on farms protects families, workers, and livelihoods.
