For many start-ups and small businesses, finding the right funding can be one of the biggest early hurdles. Whether you’re just starting out or looking to grow, understanding your finance options is key to building a sustainable business.

From grants and loans to equity funding and tax incentives, there’s a wide range of support available to help small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) across Northern Ireland. Knowing where to look and how to apply can make all the difference.

Types of finance available include:

  • Start-up loans and microfinance for early-stage businesses

  • Equity investment for scalable, high-growth ventures

  • Government grants for innovation, R&D, and job creation

  • Bank loans and overdrafts for working capital and expansion

  • Tax relief schemes like SEIS and EIS to attract investors

Each type of funding has its pros and cons depending on your business model, stage of growth, and long-term goals. That’s why it’s crucial to do your homework and get advice where possible.

New funds available to Northern Ireland businesses

Three new investment funds have recently launched to support innovation and growth among local SMEs:

  • TechStart III – A £55 million fund managed by TechStart Fund Managers, which includes a £7 million Proof of Concept grant fund. This fund is aimed at helping tech-focused entrepreneurs turn their innovative ideas into commercial ventures.

  • Co-Fund III – A £39 million fund managed by Clarendon Fund Managers. This co-investment fund works alongside private investors and business angels to support growing companies.

  • NI Small Business Loan Fund III – A £6 million fund managed by Ulster Community Finance, offering loans between £10,000 and £125,000 for established micro-businesses and SMEs needing finance to grow or diversify.

Support is available locally
If you’re based in the Omagh area or wider Northern Ireland, there are also regional programmes offering tailored guidance — from business mentoring to help preparing your funding applications.
