Hospitality Wellbeing and Development Promise

Initiative to help employers in the hospitality industry attract and retain staff by creating positive and supportive workplaces.

Hospitality and tourism businesses in Northern Ireland are being encouraged to sign up to a new industry standard for staff to help employers to meet the challenges of attracting and retaining workers in these industries.

The Wellbeing and Development Promise is a UK-wide effort to help firms recruit and retain staff and is supported by Hospitality Ulster in partnership with Tourism Northern Ireland and the Hospitality and Tourism Skills (HATS) network.

What is the Hospitality Wellbeing & Development Promise?

The promise seeks to act as a signpost for both employers and their teams to access the necessary resources to support best practices of wellbeing, not only in the workplace but also supporting individuals in their wider lives.

Guidance resources

By signing up to the promise, your business will gain access to support and guidance on key areas such as tipping, flexible working, diversity and inclusion, and in-work progression. This will enable people in these industries to reach their full potential and ensure longevity for those within the sector. This in turn helps hospitality and tourism businesses attract new applicants and improve staff retention.

How does the promise benefit my business?

Industry best practice suggests creating a business or team ethos is critical to promoting wellbeing and building retention. The promise can help your business:

  • create jobs that are attractive for jobseekers and existing staff
  • ensure staff feel valued and supported
  • create a working environment that facilitates respect among all staff
  • implement a diversity and inclusion policy
  • ensure that staff are well-rewarded for their work – considering a wide range of pay and benefits
  • create a clear policy on the fair distribution of tips
  • identify training and development opportunities for all staff at all levels
  • explore flexible working where you can and identify a range of shift patterns
  • increase its awareness of mental health challenges with working in hospitality and how to minimise these

How do I sign up to the Hospitality Wellbeing & Development Promise?
