Consultation on Climate Action in Northern Ireland

Views sought on NI’s 2030 and 2040 Emissions Reduction Targets and First Three Carbon Budgets.

The Department for Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs (DAERA) on behalf of the Northern Ireland Executive has published a consultation on Northern Ireland’s 2030 and 2040 Emissions Reduction Targets and First Three Carbon Budgets and Seeking views on Climate Change Committee (CCC) Advice Report: The path to a Net Zero Northern Ireland and welcome the views of everyone across NI.

The main aim of the consultation is to consult on the proposed 2030 and 2040 emissions targets for NI and proposed carbon budgets for the periods 2023-2027, 2028-2032 and 2033-2037.

DAERA is required to prepare regulations on carbon budgets and interim targets guided by advice from the CCC.

Climate action is a high priority for all departments and work is progressing on the development of NI’s first Climate Action Plan, which will set out policies and proposals for achieving NI’s first carbon budget (2023-2027) as well as setting out how the 2030, 2040 and 2050 emissions reduction targets will be met.

Working across all other departments, DAERA will carry out significant stakeholder engagement during the 16 weeks of the consultation to meet with, receive feedback and hear the opinions of a wide range of stakeholders.
