Can you describe your business?
Nettles & Petals is an independent florist based in Carrickmore. I design, create & style bespoke flowers for weddings, funerals, birthdays, Mother’s Day, anniversaries, Christmas, Easter, Valentine’s Day and all other poignant occasions. As well as delivering flowers on a daily basis in Mid Tyrone and the surrounding area, we travel extensively throughout Ireland with our wedding work.
Why did you start your own business?
A desire to be my own boss coupled with a passion for art and design and good quality flowers designed in a unique and personal way! After doing some research into available training and education in the field, I completed the highest floristry qualification currently available in Ireland!
What are the best things about running your own business?
Being able to manage your own workload and have autonomy over your schedule and daily tasks. Floristry is an ever evolving occupation and you are constantly learning and developing new skills, being able to use and hone your skills, passion and creativity every day really boosts job satisfaction. As a florist you have social interaction as well as a high level of flexibility and control. In addition you get to see the beautiful results of your labour. You also get to connect with some amazing people; clients, growers, wholesalers, suppliers, other florists and like-minded individuals, while working in some truly amazing locations, places and spaces.
What are the main challenges facing the business?
Increased competition from supermarkets and online marketplaces offering attractive prices and convenient one – click online services. In my professional opinion however, there is no comparison when it comes to product quality, the extra personal touch, attention to detail, care and expertise that an independent florist can provide!
What advice would you give to someone starting a business?
Work hard and be positive, enjoy what you do! Make friends and liaise with others in your respective industry, ensure and maintain the highest of standards and never stop learning and progressing.
