Can you describe your business?

I am a professional painter and decorator. I do pretty much everything your average painter and decorator does inside and outside, but I am very particular in what I do. A lot of my work consists of hand painting kitchens, renewing old tired woodwork and hand painting staircases etc.

Why did you start your own business?

I initially went to college and got a degree in fine and applied arts in the hope of becoming some sort of an artist. After graduating and getting a job as a designer and maker of 3D plaster panels, I figured it wasn’t for me. But as a parttime painter from the age of 15, I thought I’d go back to my roots and set up my own business. I enjoyed being out on site and interacting with people.

What are the best things about running your own business?

Best thing has to be customer satisfaction. I love giving my own ideas and input and I am very truthful when customers produce colour schemes. Seeing a customer’s reaction when you tell them they are wrong can be funny. But at the same time you have to respect the customer’s decision.

What are the main challenges facing the business?

There can be a few. I try my best keeping on top of things but something as simple as a change in weather can mess up a whole week and can have a knock on effect on the following week so on and so forth. Also having too much work can be a bigger problem than having no work at all.

What advice would you give to someone starting a business?

Definitely do something you love. If getting out of your bed in the morning feels like a job, then you are in the wrong job. Don’t let money motivate you. Yes we all need it, but when money becomes top priory, the work comes second best. Put your whole heart and soul into it and when things get tough just power on. There will be times when you question if you’re doing the right thing and want to pack it all in but it is all worth it in the end.

Can you describe your experience of running a business in three words or less?

Aim to please.
